Boat match at Eyebrook, Saturday July 12th 2008

A day that some would wish to forget but others to glorify.

The weather

The weather for July was very chilly with a moderate wind from the west, sometimes very gusty. However, when the wind did moderate it was quite pleasant.

The fishing

There were fish showing all day although perhaps the morning was best.

Some (4 or 5 boat) went straight for the dam but after an hour or so they moved off.

Most boats were in the bowl but some went right up to the far end. This proved a bonus for them as there were plenty of fish up there. Those who stayed in the ‘bowl’ now wish that they had ventured up that far.

In the bowl it was hard, the odd take or two but little staying on. However, there is always somebody who is in the right place at the right time with the right technique. And that was Mick and Steve. The Gods were with them as they drifted across the reservoir with their floating lines and nymphs.

Meanwhile Danny and Eddie who had gone to the far end were using dry flies. The Gods were with them too. Dry flies paid off for both of them. Danny caught his 8 fish no problem and Eddie had a great day with 7.

Ralph had one stroke of luck. In the gusty wind his top dropper caught in Allen’s line adjacent to the boat. Whilst holding the leader to unhook it, with the tip fly in the water, a fish took the tip fly, pulling on the leader that was in his hand. With a bit of luck and two joined lines he still managed to land it.

The weigh-in.

A few gloomy faces and a few smiling ones!

It was a close run match with Danny and Eddie clipping Mick and Steve at the weigh-in.

Commiserations to those who were less fortunate.

Boat Match at Grafham 20/09/2008

The Weather

Unexpectedly, after such a terrible summer, the sun came out and the temperature was up to 20 degrees. With very little cloud cover the breeze started as a gentle one from the west but soon swung round to come from the south and even the south east for a short while. This was good in that one’s back was too the sun so no sun tan lotion needed. Unfortunately this gentle breeze died away in the afternoon. At stages the reservoir was just like a mill pond, calm all over, but this did not deter many anglers who persevered to catch fish.

The lack of wind meant that a drogue was not necessary.

There were a few rises to be seen all around the lake although there were the favorite spots, mainly the north shore, where there may have been a few more.

The match

It was very variable. Those with the skill and the ‘know’ struck with fortunes. Ron, who claimed he was a veteran of Grafham and knew the lake’s good spots and what the fish wanted, was one. He was using a ‘washing line’ technique on a sinking line where by the booby on the tip kept the end of the line higher than the ‘cruncher’ on the dropper. This paid off and he caught his limit on the north shore to win the day. Ray, also with good knowledge of Grafham also did well but was clipped by Ron on weight.

However, there were some surprises. Roy caught two fish by 10am and was set for a good day. But that was the end of his catches, nothing else in the net all day. His partner, Bill, had the opposite luck. He had blanked until about mid afternoon when the Gods were with him and he picked up four fish.

Ron’s partner Danny was frustrated, alongside successful Ron, by having many follows but few in the net. A disappointing day for him!

Everyone else was using a variety of flies (boobies, blobs, buzzers, etc). Lines varied from floaters and intermediates with fish reportedly being several feet down (lack of wind and suuny?). Malcolm had a good teacher for Grafham! He did well and picked up six fish, and even used a HiDi to catch two of them.

Eddie picked up a nice fish in the north west corner at Savages Creek as the heaviest of the day, well done.

Commiserations to Ken and Allen. They tried everything, including Floaters, Intermediates, HiDis, Blobs, Boobies, Buzzers, etc and although they each had one follow and Allen lost one at the net, they both blanked. C’est la vie!!

Bad luck to John. Having packed up and loaded his car, with the key on the seat, the automated locking system locked his car  after a few minutes of no use. He could not get into his Skoda! Malcolm to the rescue (good chap). He took John back to Harrow to get a spare key and then returned to Grafham. ‘Once bitten twice shy’?

Boat match at Hanningfield 25th Oct 2008

The weather

It started off a bit chilly (just a little bit) but then one can expect that in October. There was slight overcast sky with the very occasional sun and first thing there was a gentle breeze from the south to south-west. With the water at a reasonably temperature for October it was good for fishing.

However, as the day progressed the wind came up, still from the south and it got quite choppy and chillier too.

The Fishing

With the conditions appearing to be reasonable the fish started coming out from the word go. Indeed, Allen, anchored up by Atlantis bay, caught his nice 4lb fish on his first cast and his partner Matthew was getting lots of takes. It looked as if it was going to be a good day. However, for them it was a short spell of luck and it went quiet.

Around them they could see a few boats drifting from the area away from the inlet across the bay and pulling out fish. These included Mick/Eddie and also Ray/John. However, after the earlier flurry of activity, even they found it getting harder. Mick and Ray both had a few in their bags but partners Eddie and John were not so lucky.

There was a similar situation with Roy and Bill. Roy had made a good start but then it petered out although they battled with the elements to the last and managed a good bag in the end. Pair Ken/Ralph managed to get a few each. As it got windier and colder many of the boats were anchored up in the Inlet bay, including Stan/Dave and Allen/Matthew and Roy/Bill (at the end). As some would say, it was like Piccadilly Circus. Ray said it was getting harder because of the cold South wind but I think that it usually gets harder in the afternoon anyway. Oddly enough Allen pulled out 3 fish late in the afternoon in quick succession – right place right time and his partner Matthew was unfortunate to lose several around the same time. Stan was seen pulling out the occasional fish but did not quite make the 8 by the end. Commiserations to his partner Dave, he drew the short straw today. C’est la vie.

Roy/Bill, Mick/Eddie, Ken/Ralph and Ray/John carried on drifting as it was getting harder. Ken, who had stood in for Malcolm who had been unavoidably detained, left at 4pm leaving Ralph to finish on his own until the end at 5pm.

It was not long before Eddie had had enough and they (Mick/Eddie) retired as did Ray/John. Allen/Matthew stuck it out until 45 minutes to go when they too retired

A whole variety of lines were used from floaters, intermediates to very fast sinkers. Flies included crunchers, white razzlers, minkies, lures and small flies.  When winner mick was asked where the fish were in the water he said ‘I am not really sure’.

The weigh-in

Nearly everyone had caught fish but there was a large spread as might be expected for this time of year. The reservoir average had recently been about 3 fish per angler.

At the weigh-in it was Mick who again had the heaviest bag to repeat his win of the previous year, well done.

However, he was heard to be cursing at Allen because he had clipped him by 9ozs to get the heaviest fish at 4lbs 3ozs.

Hurry, go to Farmoor while the going is good

That was the message from Roy Palmer in early October.

The fishing was so good that he went six times in a row.

Even Ken Williams went on one occasion in spite of his dislike for the reservoir. He was very surprised at how well he did!!!

On his last visit the smallest was 2lbs 12ozs and the biggest was 4lbs 4ozs.

Officers Match

This was for the end of June was cancelled because so many officers were on holiday.

It is either to be rescheduled or else some other form of entertainment (a dinner!).

Southern Federation Eliminator  (to qualify to fish for England in 2009)

Match at Bewl, 20th April 2008, qualifiers for the final were :-

Mick Hill, Simon Newman and Clive Collier

Unfortunately no Iver member qualified at Chew even though they caught their limit of 8 fish.

The final of the knockouts to qualify for England in 2009 was held in September at Bewl.

I am pleased to say that Simon and Clive both managed to qualify for England in 2009.

Masonic Fly Fishers (A charity to assist in days out for disabled youngsters)

Ken and Reg have continued to help in these matches for disadvantaged children. Allen has  been vetted and hopes to tag along during 2009.

AMFC Results

This year’s events have now been completed.  Results are as below.

Danny Peet will not be fishing for Iver during the 2009 season. His scores will be missed.

I am somewhat surprised that Queen Mother, who finished first in Group 2, are apparently declining to go up to Group 1. Personally I feel that without good reason this should NOT be allowed as it degrades the principles of having Groups.

STURGEON & SALMON FISHING IN BRITISH COLUMBIA CANADA, OCT 2008

7 Days fishing in British Columbia by Ken Williams, Neil Williams (Ken’s son), Martin Tinald and Paul Fogarty (ex-member)

1st day we fished for Sturgeon from a boat using fish eggs and smelly bait (rotten salmon) which was to be our best day with 8 fish the best caught by Martin at

6ft-5in long approx 150lb

2nd day was for salmon using single handed fly rod (no 8/9; we only fished for half a day because of the weather was blowing a gale and raining too. Paul had 3, Martin 1 and Neil had 4 using spinner.  Ken using fly blanked

3rd day was back to the Sturgeon, we all had one fish each. Neil had the biggest at 6ft-0 but Ken took the record with the smallest (18in)

4th day the weather had improved a lot so it was salmon with Martin having 3, Paul 2 Neil 2 and myself blanking again!!

5th day it was salmon again. It was my turn to day with 7 fish (all with the fly using single handed no10 rod. Paul had 3 and Martin had 3. Martin also had one on that took all of his fly line and all of his backing as well. He had to clamp the reel in order to save his line. Neil had about 14 using mainly spinner. He also had a ‘springer’ of about 25lb and also hooked another which he had to get in the boat and chase it down river. Unfortunately that fish won.

6th day - Sturgeon fishing for the last two days. Not a good day. Neil didn’t fish letting me have his rod so as to give me a better chance to get one over 100lb.  Martin had a small one, Paul and myself blanked but I had one on for about 15 mins which was approx 8ft long (these fish leap out of the water just the same as trout). Unfortunately the line snapped at the hook

7th day Neil and Martin had one each, none for Ken. It was Paul’s day. He only had one fish but it was 8ft long and a girth of 40inches.
