Bank Match at Busheyleaze Sunday 9th March

This match was originally scheduled for Saturday 15th March but because the venue was fully booked on that day it was transferred to the Sunday. With no doubt a previous Saturday’s thrashing and with storms having been predicted a few days earlier the omens were not good. However, the storms did not arrive on the Sunday - but did arrive on the following day. Never the less there was a moderate breeze coming from the west making it very difficult to cast directly into it from the east bank by the club house. That made it difficult for Danny, who would normally fish from the pier by the club house, to cast. A concession was therefore made and he was allowed to fish from a boat that was anchored up adjacent to land. Roy also went with him as a safety measure.

At 9.00am, with the arrival of a mini-bus full of youth fishermen and together with ourselves, the far western bank was completely full from one end to the other. Although the southern end of this west bank looked good, easy to cast and lots of ripple, there were no fish caught and eventually the fishermen who were there dispersed. The northern end of the west bank did produce fish but there was far less ripple. Although John did catch his limit early, it was hard going for remaining Stan and his son Bobby (the Hi-Di wrazzler men), Ken, Brian and Malcolm.

The fish were best found on the eastern banks to where the wind was blowing. On this bank Allen, on the point, and Bill, on the corner just to the right of the club house, both finished  by 11am. Roy and Danny, fishing from the island had also finished. Brian, having moved and now fishing near the point on the eastern shore line, finished around noon. Malcolm had got just one fish on the western shore but eventually moved to the far southern end but again on the eastern shore. He then quickly bagged up with another 5 fish. At that point Stan, with 4 fish, abandoned the west bank opposite the club house and moved into Malcolm’s now vacant spot. He also soon bagged up. While doing so he was heard to utter words under his tongue as to why his obstinate son Bobby was not moving from the now dead west bank. Bobby eventually did move, to slot into dad’s now vacant space, and he also bagged up.

Meanwhile Ken who had started to fish on the west bank realized that the place to fish was on the eastern bank and so moved to the east point. As usual, and unfortunately for him, the fishing got harder as the day progressed and furthermore perhaps the fish had moved away from that point. He did pick up another fish (having fished for some time without a fly on the end!) but eventually decided to pack up around 3.30pm.

Around 2pm I saw Ray Janes who said ‘2 down 2 to go’. I explained that it was really 2 down 4 to go at which point he said ‘oh my God’ and was thoroughly disillusioned. It was very difficult to cast directly into the wind around, say, the jetty where he had been fishing. He was seen to drive home around 2.30pm having weighed in his 2 fish.

Most were using slow intermediates or some form of sinker as conditions were not so good for surface fishing. All sorts of flies were used, boobies, small flies, cat’s whiskers, anything.

At weigh-in Danny had the largest bag. Danny and Bobby shared the heaviest fish trophy.

Most fish were around the 3lb mark, nothing exceptional. A few Browns were caught which were returned.

Boat Match at Draycote, Saturday 12/4/2008

The conditions :-

There was a moderate chilly breeze from the west – one had to wrap up well. Although the sun occasionally broke through, most of the time it was overcast, with the occasional hail storm.

After the recent cold spells, that day being no exception, the water was also cold, so much so that the fish were deep in the water. Those using floaters would have struggled and most used fast sinking lines (wet cel 4’s or 40+Di7’s or similar) with boobies. The effect on drifting was that one needed to get the line down quickly to the fish before the moderate breeze finished your cast run. As a consequence most boats anchored up at some point where they could suspect that there were fish.

The board in the club house said that the average return was just over 3 fish per angler.

The match  :-

Many went straight for the dams, where there was deeper water, and they used their fast sinking Hi-Dis. They stuck it out all day and for most it paid off. Mick caught a superb rainbow of over 5lbs and Stan caught a nice brown of 5lbs which are now back in season (may get him the Brown Bowl!).

However, not all using this method (deep & anchored) were totally successful. Martin, who was with Stan, was so frustrated because he kept losing fish after fish and at the end of his day only caught 5 fish. Could it have been because he was using a six inch tube fly? No doubt Stan was using a wrazzler.

Steve, fishing with Mick, also thought that he only had 7 fish until it came to weigh in. He then found that he also had 8 fish. Perhaps it was an excuse to carry on fishing and have a good day!!!

Meanwhile John and Allen started off near the tower by the dam, anchored up using fast sinkers, but nothing. So they drifted across the reservoir, the westerly wind taking them parallel to the northern bank, a few hundred yards out. Eventually, well after 10am, on the drift, they started catching. Until that point they had considered the possibility of blanking. They were now finding fish and soon after lunch had half their limit each. While continuing to drift they noticed that a non-Iver boatman was doing well, anchored up, near the northern bank. It was around 3pm and he had caught 11 fish(!!!). So John and Allen anchored up nearby and, when the anchor finally set, started catching.

At this point Ray and Danny were seen to be drifting by along the same northern bank, but not doing very well. Apparently they had tried to anchor up but the anchor did not hold (I wonder whether the anchor had not dropped the right way up so that it could not dig in?).

John, using his 40+Di7 and a yellow eyed boobie was now pulling them in. He had the magic. Allen, his partner, slowly progressed but kept losing them (including one which tangled up in John’s line) and at the end could only manage 7 fish.

I did not see Reg & Brian but apparently they had  good day.

Finally, after having sat through 2 heavy hail storms, it was time for weigh-in, accompanied by a massive rainbow in the sky.

Danny and Ray were not happy and wanted to depart as quickly as possible but Danny did weigh in his 3 fish – the master had failed that day. Mick and Stan were proud of their large fish, Stan having the heaviest bag.

Bank Match at Haywards Farm (Nr Reading) 24/5/2008

Another good day at Haywards. It is rare for anyone not to get their limit here and today was no exception.

It was a nice day, very sunny but with a slightly chilly easterly wind. The wind increased as the day progressed to give a good ripple on the water. The eastern end of the lake had a mild breeze/ripple but this increased towards the western bank making it extremely difficult to cast into the wind at this western end.

Of the dozen Iver Anglers most headed for the northern bank, partly because the wind direction favoured casting from this bank.

The first to finish was Ray Simpson. He had gone to the near south-eastern corner which fortunately at the start of the day was not too difficult for casting. As he said, right place & right time and by about 9.45am he had his four fish.

Stan, having caught three fish on a promontory on the north bank, vacated his spot to Martin and was then brave enough to try casting into the wind at the western end. It paid off and his booby on a heavy line and first cast caught his last fish and he was second to finish around 10am.

After that others started to finish, Brian, Ray Janes, Allen and by 11.00am over half had finished.

The secret was to get a good cast into the deeper water where most of the fish resided. The edges were generally quite shallow except at the far south western corner where Malcolm had staked his luck for the day. He lost a big Brown there. He never saw it himself but a non-Iver angler on the adjacent bank saw it as it streamed away from Malcolm swirling about 3 foot from this other angler’s feet. Never mind, all the fun of the day. Malcolm did catch one that weighed in at well over 4lbs.

Reg started on the point half way along the northern end. He was there with Jane, a guest for the day but hopefully a new member in the future. She had only been fishing a few times, learning fast, so the point was a good place to be, jutting out into the deeper water. It was here that by noon Reg had his four fish and Jane, with a bit of help/advice, had three. However, the wind increased in strength making the point difficult. So she moved to the quieter north eastern water. It is here that there is reputed to be a hole and is popular for Browns and today Jane pulled one out of the bag, a nice one at 3lbs 6 ozs.

By 1 pm there were only two anglers to finish, Ken & Roy, John having just finished. Roy had struggled, wrong place, wrong time, all the good spots had been taken early on. With the wind increasing and the lunch time doldrums upon them it had become much harder where they now were, near the lodge where the cars park. The fish seemed to have moved out and a long cast was required alongside the difficult wind. They persevered and they both finished around 1.35pm.

At the end it was Allen who won the day, thanks to a good rainbow that he caught in the deep water at the far end.

Boat Match at Rutland 14th June 2008

The weather was good for fishing, not the hot day that might be expected for flaming June. It started off mainly sunny with the occasional big cloud which caused the wind direction to change by 90 degrees to come from the west instead of north. However, around lunchtime a heavy sky came from the west, the wind crept up, it became chilly and rained for a brief spell. It then settled down and there was nearly 100% cloud cover and a steady wind N to NW – good for fishing. See below what this change of weather did!!

The boat numbers were disappointing but unfortunately people will go on holiday or fish in other matches (eg. Mick was in the USA and Danny in Scotland).

The 4 boats kicked off at 9am (end was 5pm). Three headed east along the southern bank whilst Ray and Eddie (nice to see Eddie re-surfacing) headed for the north arm and so disappeared for about 5 hours.

At 10am those of us who were on the southern bank were very gloomy. Although Allen had caught one fish the other five had blanked, using all sorts of methods. The outlook was not good and we suspected that there might be a few blanks. The odd fish did come but it was very hard.

Meanwhile Ray and Eddie in the north arm were also struggling although they had caught a few, Ray catching the best fish of the day, - a beautiful 4lb full finned fish.

At about noon that heavy cloud and rain reached us and suddenly everything changed. It was just as if a switch had been turned. As Eddie said, the fish came up and we could catch them. Ken jumped into the action catching 3 fish on one drift.

Ray and Eddie came over and joined us on the southern bank and immediately found fish.

Most people were hitting fish but they would not stay on.

By 3pm Allen had 6 fish and John had 3. John then had the midas touch and caught 4 fish to Allen’s zero for John to win the day with Allen second.

Well done John.

It was also nice to see our new member Ralph, new to fly fishng in a boat.

Commiserations go to Martin. He tried everything in the book, HiDis, floating lines, boobys, big flies, small flies but nothing held. He (and Stan) even had a rudder to try a different sort of fishing for a while. Better luck next time.

Officers Match

This was for the end of June was cancelled because so many officers were on holiday.

It is to be rescheduled.

Southern Federation Eliminator  (to qualify to fish for England in 2009)

Match at Bewl, 20th April 2008, qualifiers for the final were :-

            Mick Hill

            Simon Newman

            Clive Collier

Unfortunately no Iver member qualified at Chew even though they caught their limit of 8 fish.

The final of the knockouts to qualify for England in 2009 will be held in September at Bewl.

EDFF (English Disabled Fly Fishers)

Eddie, Danny, Ken, Roy, John and Mick (some were associate members) fished recently at Rutland. Their catches were not exceptional but England (which included Danny) beat Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

Masonic Fly Fishers (A charity to assist in days out for disabled youngsters)

Ken and Reg had a feather in their caps by helping out in June at Barn Elms near Pangbourne. Fortunately the weather was fine and a good day was had by all.

AMFC Results

The first 2 rounds for 2008 produced nothing exceptional with Iver FF hovering around the middle of the league. However, the 3rd round in June produced a big comeback in that Iver FF coming 1st thanks to several limits (Danny Peet & Jim Watt). Iver FF are now 2nd in the league with 10 points behind Queen Mother with 13 points. We are all waiting for the outcome of the 4th round on July 19th.
