Fishing Report for the Match at Hanningfield, Sunday Oct 15th 2006

Summary :-

Considering this was October then this was one of the best matches for the club. Everyone caught lots of fish, and some were cracking ones at that. This was a friendly match with Queen Mother club and they had some good results too.

Weather & conditions :-

The weather was forecast to be misty cloud in the morning with a breeze from the south east followed by sun in the afternoon. They almost got it right. There was a glimpse of the sun in the afternoon but not clear skies. This bode well for the fishermen as the lack of sun kept the fish up.

However, it was a bit chilly, especially when the breeze stepped up a notch or two.

The water was very low in spite of all the rain that we have recently had. Off the point by ‘Atlantis’ just past the inlet bay the water was so low that there was not enough depth for the motor and it churned up the.

The Event :-

Starting at 9.00am most boats headed straight for the Inlet Bay. The fish appeared to be around the edges in the shallower water, especially off the point at the east end of this bay (Atlantis Point). Boats were drifting from near the bank out into the middle, especially along the edge near the inlet and also from the point at the east end of the bay. Fish were being caught in 2-3 foot of water.

Stan and Dave decided to anchor up in the south east corner of the bay about 50 yards from the bank. They caught lots of fish, one for Stan being a nice 5 pounder.

It was Ray’s day and, fishing off the shallows near the Atlantis Point he had finished by about noon.

He said that it was too easy!!! Although his partner John struggled for his last as the afternoon progressed. He got there though.

Unfortunately as the afternoon progressed the fishing got harder and by about 2-3pm you needed to be in the right place at the right time. There still appeared to be fish near the inlet and those near the Atlantis Point had all but disappeared.

It was nice to see Danny again – his home-town of Sheffield is a long way off.

Congratulations go to Jeff who caught the biggest, and like most of the fish, it had a beautiful full tail.

The Weigh-In :-

Lots of fish, many being sizeable. Who would get the biggest bag and the biggest fish. As the weigh-in progressed it kept changing. It finished with a smiling Jeff Hickson, winner for Iver and the overall leader at 20lbs

As for Queen Mother, well their champion was the lady. Although she did not have the largest fish she never the less had many that were very good giving her the weight of the Queen Mother day at 18lbs.

Highlights

Poor old Dave. He was pulling his stuck line through the rings, giving the rod quite a bend, when BANG. His rod snapped. Not to be outdone, back to the lodge for a new rod and return for fishing.

Furthermore he cast his full length line when the head disappeared into the distance, never to be seen again. To top it all he had a hard miserable day for his efforts. Better luck next time.

Ken caught 5 fish in a row to Allen’s none. Then Allen changed to a black boobie (surprise!) and caught 5 in a row to Ken’s none. Just goes to show!!!!!!
